Little Big Knights: Students Helping Students
The student-led Newbury High School HPAC group has implemented a peer mentoring program between middle school students and high school students called Little Big Knights. Students in the HPAC group identified bullying, coping with stress, and mental health as issues that affect our Newbury community. They hope to have an impact on these issues by building relationships and serving as mentors to middle school students.
Representatives from the Geauga County ESC trained all peer mentors in a day-long session that involved relationship building, dealing with sensitive issues, goal setting, and planning sessions.
Mentors met with their mentees for the first time on Monday, December 11. After a “getting-to-know-you” game, their first activity together was making holiday cards for children who will spend their holidays in the hospital from illness.
Little Big Knights will continue to meet twice a month for the rest of the school year. The peer mentors are planning all sessions for the program and are including topics like: stress relief, bullying, health & wellness, and kindness.
